Our Ref Doorstep/M 17:
TRADING STANDARDS AND POLICE WARNING-
BEEN OPERATING IN THIS AREA
We are writing to inform you that we have received reports of doorstep traders and canvassers operating in your area. Whilst it is not illegal for traders to "cold call" this is often a sales method used by rogue traders and cowboy builders. We have had a number of incidents in the area where doorstep traders have:
• Carried out unnecessary work or deliberately damaged property to make more
work or falsely claimed to have carried out work;
• Overcharged for the work or take money when no work has been carried out;
• Driven the victim to the bank or cash point to obtain money under duress;
• Bullied and victimised vulnerable consumers into having work done and
paying for the work.
We strongly advise consumers never to agree to buy anything or to have work done by a trader who "cold calls" at the door. If you have recently agreed to have work done by a trader that knocked on your door it is not too late to get help and advice. In most circumstances you will have a 14 day cooling-
Please report any cold calling of doorstep traders and canvassers to the police nonemergency number 101 or call Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506. If you have vulnerable and/or elderly neighbours please keep an eye out to see who is attending their property and report anything suspicious to 101 .
Swindon Trading Standard Service runs a Buy with Confidence approved trader scheme. We always recommend that you do not buy at the door, so if you are looking for a good local trader you can trust, we advise you to obtain 3 quotes fom one of our approved traders. Please find enclosed our current approved trader list.
or call us on 01793 466155.
