Our Remembrance Day service in November saw
one of Highworth’s largest turnouts in recent years
to remember those who gave their lives for us in
war. Evidently Highworth people are well aware of
the great personal sacrifices our servicemen and
women make. How can we do more than just
remember those who survive but now need
rehabilitation?
One practical way is to support a charity formed in
October to raise money for this very purpose. Help
for Heroes is raising money to build an orthopaedic
swimming pool at Headley Court, the Services main
rehabilitation centre in the UK near Epsom in
Surrey. The initiative came from a former Green
Jacket who, having visited some of the wounded
and seen their suffering, their courage, their
modesty and their cheerfulness, wanted to help.
In just four months the charity raised more than £3
million. The fund has many public backers, such as
HRH Princes William and Harry, Chief of the General
Staff General Sir Richard Dannatt and David
Beckham.
